M&S has been a fixture in British wardrobes for more than a century, but it’s now made its biggest fashion statement yet: debuting at London Fashion Week alongside luxury names like Burberry and Erdem.

As part of its 100th anniversary celebrations, the high street giant has brought together its Collection, Per Una and Autograph lines. Every look was inspired by the retailer’s archive, from 1940’s tailoring to 1920’s lace – and everything is available to shop immediately. Indicative of the stalwart’s new sartorial status, attendees included David Gandy, Jackie Collins, and Jessie Ware, alongside fashion editors, buyers and tastemakers.

A nod to previous eras of British fashion, iconic models such as Lara Stone, Erin O’Connor, Jodie Kidd, and Karen Elson walked the runway to cheers from the audience, while Liam Gallagher’s son Lennon also made an appearance (Noel’s daughter Anaïs sat in the front row).

The cast spanned ages 21-60, reflecting the multi-generational appeal of M&S. Following high-profile catwalk shows at Ibiza and Silverstone for its summer collections, this “see now, buy now” model for autumn/winter shakes up the LFW formula.

The collection is less about being groundbreaking, but more about demonstrating what M&S has always done best: wearable, polished pieces that won’t feel dated by next season. Since 1926, the retailer has been a go-to on the high street for wardrobe essentials, but it’s recently become a credible fashion player. Thanks to creative direction that takes cues from the catwalk, M&S’s own runway show was peppered with high-end looks.

Faux fur pieces were standout, from fur trim jackets to throws, while lace camis and matching slips, cape dresses and tops, sequin dresses and fringed skirts looked more high-end than high street. The styling was on point, offering plenty of inspiration for both your evening and everyday wardrobe. Off-shoulder knits were paired with loose denim, plaid collars poked out of jumpers, and clashing print scarves were thrown over outerwear. Shoes and accessories also featured, from red pointed kitten heels to mesh ballet flats.

The beauty of the collection was how easily all the pieces can slot into your existing wardrobe – and 50 per cent off the line costs less than £50. Speaking to guests at the drinks reception afterwards, it’s clear that M&S belongs on the London Fashion Week schedule just as much as luxury houses. After all, the retailer has just as much heritage attached to it, while catering to a purse-conscious fashion customer.

Among my favourite pieces from the show, this sequin skirt with an asymmetrical tassel hem will earn you best-dressed at any Christmas party.

A hero piece for your cold-weather wardrobe, this grey knit is elevated by the deep V-neckline, while the merino wool composition only adds to its luxurious feel. Take cues from the catwalk and style with red trousers – a breakout trend.

A tailored co-ord that has you covered for the office and smart evening occasions, this blazer is complete with palazzo-style matching wide leg trousers (£58, Marksandspencer.com). A key trend for this season, pleated skirts are dominating high street collections. This kilt from M&S embraces minimalism with its black finish, midi hem and wrap front. A buckle fastening is the final flourish. The brown finish makes it look three times the price.

Swap tailored trousers for this flattering maxi skirt this autumn. Characterised by panelling and a frayed textured finish, the skirt is easily styled with everything from knitwear to shirts and blazers.

This duffel coat will bundle you up in style for winter. Complete with an on-trend funnel neck and front buckle fastening, the faux leather PU contrasts the textured finish. For £100, the 25 per cent wool composition offers stellar value for money.

After a long, hot summer, I’ve been dreaming of enveloping clothing. This M&S cape offers a happy compromise, complete with bat sleeves and a gloaty cut. The high neck and styling versatility are chef’s kiss.

Inject this season’s hottest animal print into your wardrobe. M&S’s zebra print ballet flats boast a sophisticated pointed toe and slim heel, adding instant character to even the simplest of outfits.

More weather-appropriate than a mini but more playful than a maxi, this M&S skirt features an asymmetrical skirt and elegant pleated detailing. The contrasting black and polka dot panelling creates a point of difference. Style with a long-sleeve white T-shirt and knit jumper tied around the waist for a pop of colour.

One of my highlights from the show, this midi skirt boasts a pencil cut and vintage-inspired floral print. The nineties-coded piece will look effortlessly stylish with a simple black knit, as styled on the runway.

Capes featured throughout the M&S collection, including this expensive-looking dress. The cape detail offers extra coverage, while creating an effortlessly elegant look.

It wasn’t just the It-girl roster of models who reminded us of the nineties – this lace co-ord practically screams it. The delicate cami top is complete with a matching midi hem length (£75, Marksandspencer.com).

Bomber coats are a given each autumn, but this M&S style puts a stylish spin on the classic. Sophisticated without trying too hard, the jacket boasts a khaki satin finish, detachable faux fur collar and boxy cut.

Taking you from your desk to dinner, this white overcoat strikes a balance between smart and relaxed. The show styling was pure perfection – simply add these £20 faux fur cuffs (Marksandspencer.com).
