Finding your signature scent is no mean feat in 2026. From sugary gourmands and smoky ouds to an influx of new niche perfume houses, the category is booming, and our sensibilities are changing with it.

Over 70 per cent of women in the UK now prefer to have a “fragrance wardrobe” to cater to different moods and occasions, rather than a traditional “signature scent”. We’re also more preoccupied with longevity, sillage and design, which goes some way to explaining why searches for the best luxury perfumes for women are surging.

Yes, luxury options are considerably more expensive, but they also use rare, higher-quality ingredients and intensive extraction techniques to craft longer-lasting fragrances, making them investment pieces you can return to for years to come.

So, how do you go about choosing? Almira Armstrong, founder of luxury perfume brand Lumira, argues it should be instinctive. “Begin by identifying the fragrance families you naturally gravitate towards, then test the fragrance on your skin and allow it to develop over several hours. Consider how comfortably it fits into your everyday life, how the scent evolves during the dry-down and whether its longevity and projection suit your preferences. It should reflect how you to feel.”

Ahead, our pick of the very best luxury fragrances for women in 2026, from icons that have stood the test of time to newcomers set to become the new guard of perfumery.

For this list, I tested each perfume against others in its category over the course of a month, assessing each for performance, throw, sillage, projection and lasting power.

What we love: Distinctive bottle, crowd-pleasing fragrance, air of mystery, and long-lasting

With its distinctive glass-spun bottles, niche luxury fragrance brand Vilhelm Parfumerie has become a favourite among celebrities and beauty editors alike. Blended in Paris and based on the memories of its founder, Swedish designer Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren, its newest scent, Dear Lord, is a revelation. Crafted to express “inner aristocracy and modern refinement”, this grounded, woody composition is at once a crowd-pleaser but also carries an air of mystery. It opens with crisp bergamot, evoking the feeling of petrichor after rain on stone-paved streets. As it settles, it meets creamy, warm, cocooning papyrus and sandalwood, before evolving into a slightly sugary, smoky trail of palo santo that lasts well into the night.

What we love: Fresh and slightly floral, nuances of elderflower and musky notes, longevity and throw are impressive

Escentric Molecules revolutionised the industry when they launched their iconic Molecule 01—a fragrance comprising just one singular component, the velvety, cedarwood-y molecule Iso E Super that pioneered the skin-scent craze. Now, the brand has added sage cultivated in the south of France, used in both oil and absolute form. The result is a resoundingly clear and sparky green scent: it’s fresh, herbaceous, and slightly floral, with nuances of elderflower, before it dries into something more enveloping and musky. Unlike many other airy scents, it has impressive longevity and throw too.

What we love: A true classic, expensive-smelling, rich gourmand fragrance, and decadent

One of the most iconic fragrances of the 21st century, and certainly one of the best-selling, the oft-copied Baccarat Rouge remains inimitable, even 12 years after it was first launched. A heady, evocative woody, ambery floral, it was first crafted in collaboration with Baccarat to convey the radiance and density of fine crystal. It opens with breezy jasmine and rare saffron, which carry the mineral accord of dry wood and ambergris, before evolving into a rich, chocolaty and decadent gourmand, thanks to ethyl maltol. It’s rich, decadent, and perhaps the origin point of “expensive-smelling perfume”. The sillage is incredibly long-lasting, which only adds to its appeal. It’s a classic on any fragrance obsessive’s shelf.

What we love: An icon, inspired myriad copycats but remains one of a kind, celebrity-favourite, balanced and moreish scent that’s wearably sexy

Another icon that has come to define the olfactory spirit of New York, and with it a generation of cool young things, is Le Labo’s Santal 33. Its influence looms large today, inspiring countless copycat scents and perfume houses, yet it remains one of a kind. Worn by everyone from Justin Bieber to Jodie Comer and Alexa Chung, Santal 33 is an enveloping, dry, smoky mix of woody Australian sandalwood and milky papyrus. Founder Fabrice Penot initially set out to create a homage to the American Midwest, inspired by old Marlboro adverts, and as such, there’s a balance that occurs in the heart notes: soft leather, cedarwood, musk and spicy cardamom, followed by powdery, airy iris and violet. It’s moreish, intoxicating and deeply, wearably sexy.

What we love: Ornate bottle, balanced sweet scent, long-lasting and powerful projection

Parfums de Marly’s Delina is an absolute floral explosion. It calls to mind 18th-century powder rooms, with a bottle ornate enough for Marie Antoinette’s vanity. Despite coming out in 2017, it’s recently seen a huge surge of interest on social media—it’s even made its way into Snoop Dogg’s rotation. Delina is super sweet and girlish, but in a balanced way. It’s not sugary, but juicy, with opening notes of rhubarb, lychee, rose and peony. On the dry down, it matures into more of a gourmand, with creamy vanilla, musk, cashmeran and grounding vetiver. While fruity florals have a bad reputation for not being long-lasting, this is the opposite: it has very powerful projection, and I normally get compliments well after I think it’s disappeared.

What we love: A chic, elegant and elevated take on a musky skin scent, and gorgeous diamond-inspired finish

Inspired by the Bijoux de Diamants high jewellery collection created by Gabrielle Chanel in 1932, Comète is an ode to its most iconic, diamond-encrusted necklace, sometimes referred to as the “shooting star”. The fragrance conveys the same brilliant luminosity, thanks to sparkling aldehydes, while cherry blossom, powdery iris and the milky, vanilla-like quality of heliotrope create a warming, elegant finish that practically melts into the skin. Think of it as a more elevated, sensual take on a musky skin scent. It’s the chicest perfume in my collection.

What we love: Stylish packaging, crisp, fresh fragrance with sandalwood notes

Inspired by an early morning walk, this scent of Jil Sander’s latest collection, Olfactory Series 1, feels like drawing a deep breath of crisp air. Bright and zesty, it opens with fizzy aldehydes and a bitter lime accord to evoke the distinctive Japanese herb, Shiso, which is sharp, minty and a little spicy. Later, on the dry down, you’ll discover bitter juniper berry and sultry Australian sandalwood. I’d be remiss not to mention its minimalist packaging; the cloche lid is to die for.

What we love: Grown-up fragrance that evokes summer days, lush citrus notes and display-worthy bottle

Many citrus scents can feel a little bitter on the palate, but Bottega Veneta’s Montebello brings out the best of these very zesty fruits, including blood orange, grapefruit, lemon, and orange, and blends them beautifully, with the help of deep, sensual neroli. The result is an altogether more grown-up citrus fragrance that evokes long summers spent vacationing on the blue shores of the Mediterranean. The fragrance was actually crafted as a homage to the fashion house’s atelier, and the aromas of its lush garden, filled with pine and orange trees.

What we love: An English icon with delicate floral notes, and a timeless autumn favourite that’s perfect for gifting

A modern icon, Jo Malone’s English Pear & Freesia is an ode to the fruits of the English orchard in autumn. Golden sunshine beams down on ripe, juicy, King William pears, which mingle with the delicate floral sweetness of white freesias. Later, an interplay between dawn and dusk comes to the fore with patchouli, musk, amber, and tart rhubarb. While it’s not the longest-lasting scent, you can still smell warm woods many hours after the initial spritz. It’s truly timeless and my most gifted fragrance for a reason.

What we love: Rihanna’s favourite perfume, lives up to the hype and smells almost good enough to eat, with incredible staying power and projection

Allegedly the favourite perfume of Rihanna (rumoured to be the best-smelling person in Hollywood), Kilian’s Love, Don’t Be Shy has acquired cult status in recent years. It more than lives up to the hype, though: this is a heady cocktail of delicious desserts that smells almost good enough to eat. It opens syrupy and sexy, with neroli leading into a rich mix of marshmallow, vanilla and orange blossom. Meanwhile, sunny Moroccan rose, juicy honeysuckle and ambery labdanum add depth and keep the scent from becoming overly sweet. It’s the ultimate gourmand fragrance, but with enough sophistication to leave any juvenile associations at the door. Plus, it has incredible staying power and projection; it’s certainly not subtle.

What we love: Warm, cosy and autumnal, with close-to-the-body projection

For me, no scent feels as warm, cosy and autumnal as Diptyque's Le Papier. One sniff of the opening of white musks, steamed rice, mimosa and blonde woods makes me want to curl up with a blanket and a good book. Blended to evoke the soft, textural grain of paper and the act of writing, this is an incredibly intimate, creamy skin scent that melts into your unique body chemistry. The projection stays close-to-the-body, so it’s not the strongest scent, but that’s no bad thing; rather than filling the room, it invites people to lean in.

What we love: Unique amber scent with textured sweetness, grown-up and perfect for special occasions

Perhaps the most unique amber scent I have ever smelled, Byredo’s Future Memories aims to bottle that transcendent moment just before a memory is formed. Fizzy aldehydes operate as an invitation to be present, while white vanilla, Madagascan vanilla and vanilla liquor accord add a smoky, textured sweetness. This is a grown-up scent for the modern-day wearer; perfect for special occasions, or where you want to show up as your best self. While at first the throw is strong, it evolves into something softer after a few hours, leaving an enigmatic trail well into the evening.

What we love: Long-lasting, wearable for everyday, and enveloping, decadent fragrance

One of the longest-lasting perfumes in my collection, Halfeti, is one of Penhaligon’s best-sellers. It’s not hard to see why: it’s intoxicatingly rich, spicy and decadent, yet still wearable enough for every day—if you don’t spritz too much. Inspired by the precious goods traded by the Ottoman Empire, from exotic flowers and spices to soft leather, it opens with citrus and herbs, bergamot, grapefruit, saffron, cardamom and cypress needles. Next comes jasmine and Bulgarian rose, before it dries down to a warm, enveloping base of leather, precious oud, cedar, amber, musk, tonka and, finally, creamy vanilla.

What we love: Fresh and wearable, with traditional oud balanced by cut grass and zesty notes

While many oud perfumes tend to skew heavy, Initio re-wrote the rules with OUD FOR HAPPINESS, which injects the fragrance family with a fresh, wearable twist. On first spritz, there’s a hit of freshly cut grass, as well as zesty notes of bergamot and ginger. This gives way to more traditional oud notes, including cedarwood and liquorice. This has all the richness of an oud, it’s just freshened up considerably so you can wear it whenever and wherever.

What we love: Evokes tropical holidays with its moreish, soft floral accords and white rose

One whiff of Creed’s Virgin Island Water instantly transports me to tropical locales, replete with shimmering blue seas and white sand. It perfectly evokes the crisp, sweet sea breeze of the Caribbean with bergamot, lime and tropical fruits. Then comes milky coconut, conjuring rum-based piña coladas, while soft, floral accords of jasmine and white rose ground the scent beautifully. It’s incredibly moreish and, in my eyes, the olfactory definition of the dream summer holiday.

What we love: Bold and punchy with incredible staying power and projection, it’s winter in a bottle

Balenciaga relaunched its perfume category last year to much fanfare, and this year, returned with three extraits that aren’t for the faint-hearted. Bold and punchy, they have incredible staying power and projection, if that’s your thing. My favourite of the trio is Amber Crush, which is just winter in a bottle. Of course, there’s the central note of warm amber, but it’s blended into a heady concoction of juicy plum, deep, enveloping sandalwood, resinous incense and precious spices. It’s incredibly sophisticated, and connotes the holiday season, without ever being obvious.

What we love: Seductive, potent enough to fill a room and perfect for special occasions

Taking inspiration from the rarest of flowers, Black Orchid is one of the most seductive scents out there. It’s a spicy floral that feels rich and luxurious, thanks to an unexpected opening of black truffle and ylang-ylang, which can be potent enough to fill a room. The dry-down is where it really sings, though, with sultry, musky spices, patchouli, creamy dark chocolate, incense and a gourmand note of vanilla. It’s the perfect choice for evening, or for very special occasions.

What we love: A feminine fragrance legend with lipstick notes for a waxy quality and an elegant bottle

A legend in and out of olfactory circles, Portrait of a Lady was blended by none other than Dominique Ropion, one of the modern-day virtuosos of perfumery. With it, he attempted to bottle the elegance and poise of the titular heroine of Henry James’ The Portrait of a Lady, after which the scent is named—but it’s also rumoured to have been inspired by Princess Grace of Monaco herself. This really is a reinvention of the rose scent: there’s oodles of Turkish rose (400 flowers per 100ml), mixed with earthy patchouli, sandalwood and frankincense, as well as red berries. The note that really stands out to me, though, is lipstick; it has that waxy quality with a hint of plastic. While that may sound off-putting, it isn’t; as the name suggests, it’s incredibly feminine, but not too sweet. It’s elegance bottled.

What we love: Fresh notes with a warm, musky base that melts into skin

“Clean” and “soapy” perfumes have seen a massive surge of interest in recent years, but they don’t need to be boring. Perfumer H’s collaboration with cult British fashion label, Studio Nicholson, is a masterclass on how this new category should be blended. There are fresh notes of orange flower mixed with glittering aldehydes and white pepper. Then, it turns warm, woody and musky, with cardamom, a powdery base of musk, and finally a puff of enveloping, creamy tonka that just melts into the skin.

What we love:

Infused with hydrating and revitalising botanical waters, this alcohol-free, water-based formula gently hydrates without stripping the skin or hair. Its ultra-lightweight texture is designed to be spritzed and layered liberally, so you can apply it as often as you like. The ultimate vacation mist, it evokes warm sunlight on sun-kissed skin after an ocean swim, with uplifting citrus, aquatic sea salt and a soft, clear musk creating the sensation of salty coastal air lingering on the skin.

Still stuck? Of course fragrance is incredibly personal, but if you’re looking for a crowdpleaser that works well for all occasions, you can’t go wrong with Vilhem Perfumer’s Dear Lord, which is an enveloping woody scent, with impressive lasting power.

If you want to invest in something stronger, Penhaligon’s spicy, leathery Halfeti is a real compliment magnet, with incredible projection. And if you want something subtle that you can’t go wrong with for every day, then Jo Malone’s English Pear & Freesia is a classic for a reason: it’s a delicate, juicy floral, which dries down to a warming, musky concoction on the skin.
