6 wonderful whites to enjoy with shellfish

A switch in season and suddenly we’re rediscovering transitional menus… and peak of the seafood calendar.

With seafood stalls brimming with native oysters – September signals the start of the native oyster season; alongside mussels, clams, langoustine and crab, it’s time to plunder the fruits of the sea.

And for purposes here, pluck a fresh white to sink with these freshly caught favourites – and much-loved delicacies.

Here’s what’s sharpening our palate before cracking open those shells…

Whether it’s seafood linguine or seared scallops, you can’t beat a bottle of Gavi – the cortese grape is behind the wine and this one’s a winner with its crisp, refreshing characteristic peach, honey and white fruit flavours, citrus, delicate almond note, and nicely textured palate backed by good acidity. Delicious.

Extremely drinkable.

A top value Macon-Villages from an excellent producer, this fresh and lively chardonnay is a natural bedfellow with richer shellfish – think langoustine, lobster and crab cakes with its nice acidity to balance the sweet delicate flavours – topped with delightful flavours of green apple, ripe pear and citrus. A delectable quaffer, and one which also cries out for moules mariniere and crusty bread to dunk in the creamy white wine and garlic sauce.

Elegant and one for oysters, scallops, crabmeat and pretty much any shellfish you fancy.
