A number of deaths reported after house fire

A number of gardaí (Irish police) stand guard at cordons in a housing estate in Waterford. Fire engines are parked at the scene. The street is lined with large, semi-detached houses, some trees and there is a communal lawn in the foreground.

It is believed that a number of people may have died following a house fire in Waterford city in the Republic of Ireland.

It happened at a housing estate in the Birchwood area, just off the Killure Road.

The emergency services, including firefighters and gardaí (Irish police), remain at the scene.

Staff from Gas Networks Ireland also attended, according to Irish broadcaster RTÉ.

In a statement, gardaí said that because it was an "ongoing evolving incident" they were not in a position to provide any further detail at present.
