A man who tried to murder his estranged wife by driving his car over her twice has died in jail.

William Budge, 63, was caught on camera ramming Sandra Budge with his car in Edinburgh in April 2024, before turning around and driving over her again as she lay on the ground.

He was initially sentenced to seven years and seven months after he pled guilty to various charges last year, but the Crown successfully appealed and Budge was given a jail term of 10 years and 10 months.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed he died at HMP Glenochil last Tuesday.

A spokesperson said: "Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual.

"Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland are advised and the matter reported to the procurator fiscal."

A fatal accident inquiry will be held in due course.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Budge attacked his estranged wife in Muirhouse Parkway because he was "embarrassed" she had left him.

He pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge as well as assault to severe injury, permanent disfigurement, permanent impairment, danger of life and attempted murder.

Sandra Budge, who was left with life-threatening injuries, condemned the initial sentence and said it did not inspire confidence in the justice system.

At the initial sentencing, Lord Lake told Budge the video of the attempted murder was "quite horrifying to watch".

The judge said Budge used his car as a weapon and added: "The callousness and cruelty of your actions are astonishing."

Lord Lake added that, having seen the footage of the incident, it was remarkable Budge's victim was not killed.

Budge pled guilty to the attack in 2024, as well as a previous assault and a course of abusive behaviour.

Lord Lake told Budge that he would have faced an 11-year jail term for the murder bid but it would be modified to take into account his guilty pleas.
