Al Pacino to receive lifetime achievement award at Actor Awards

The 86-year-old has won an Oscar, two Emmys, four Golden Globes and a Bafta.

Hollywood star Al Pacino will be honoured at next year’s Actor Awards after being named the next recipient of the Sag-Aftra life achievement award.

The 86-year-old will be given the prize at what was formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, during its ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in February.

Pacino said: “I wondered and wandered most of my life but have always felt at home with a script and my fellow actors.

“It’s the work and the actors along the way that have been among the greatest joys of my life.

“It’s an honour to be recognised by Sag-Aftra in celebrating the journey.”

In more than six decades in the business, Pacino has won an Oscar, two Emmys, four Golden Globes and a Bafta Film Award, among many other accolades.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, internationally famous for starring in movies such as Dog Day Afternoon, Scent Of A Woman and The Godfather trilogy.

Pacino has also featured in films such as Serpico, Scarface and Heat and, more recently, he starred alongside fellow Hollywood veterans Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci in The Irishman.

The life achievement award is the union’s highest honour, with recipients nominated and voted on by a Sag-Aftra committee.

It also acknowledges humanitarian work, and the guild said Pacino has been recognised for charitable efforts for causes such as disaster relief, hunger and poverty, as well as his work supporting local theatre companies.

Sag-Aftra president Sean Astin said: “I have spent my life in awe and appreciation of the force of nature that is Al Pacino.

“When you watch him perform, you are witnessing a student and a master. Al Pacino is an artist of extraordinary courage, intensity and heart whose work has always set an exceptional standard of skill and talent.

“All of that and he’s just plain fun to watch.”

Previous recipients of the award include Katharine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Audrey Hepburn, James Earl Jones, Jane Fonda and Harrison Ford.

The 33rd annual Actor Awards, presented by Sag-Aftra, will be streamed live on Netflix on February 28 at 8pm US eastern time (1am on March 1 UK time).
