Alyn Smith has been appointed as the Scottish government's new minister for innovation, technology and tertiary education.

It follows the resignation of Ben Macpherson last week.

The Scottish government said First Minister John Swinney made the appointment via video call as Smith is currently suffering from a minor illness.

Smith became the MSP for Stirling in May following the Scottish Parliament election.

He was previously MP for Stirling at Westminister from 2019 to 2024, after being a Member of the European Parliament for Scotland since 2004.

Swinney described Smith as "one of the most experienced parliamentarians in the UK".

The first minister said: "He has broad international experience and has shown long-term interest in skills, universities and colleges.

"Scotland's future prosperity will be built on the talent of our people, the strength of our universities and colleges, and our ability to turn world-class ideas into jobs, investment and opportunity."

He said Smith would will work closely with Education Secretary Mairi McAllan to "deliver for Scotland's people, communities and businesses".

Ben Macpherson stood down from the government post last week, saying he wanted to focus on other "important pressures", including his mental and physical wellbeing.

Macpherson, who represents Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith, had served in various junior ministerial roles since 2018.
