Five dead after cargo jet overruns runway and hits vehicles near Miami airport

Five people have died and three others were critically injured after an Amazon-branded Boeing 767 cargo jet overran the runway at Miami International Airport before crashing into vehicles on a major road.

The cargo jet, operated by 21 Air, hit several vehicles after going around 1,500 ft beyond the end of the runway at about 2pm local time yesterday.

Footage shows the aircraft coming in to land on runway 30 with only about 4,500ft of runway remaining – well beyond the runway threshold according to industry experts – before veering off the end with its nose down and an engine on fire.

Flight data showed it was travelling at 112knots (129mph) when it left the end of the runway.

‘It then crossed NW 67th Avenue, striking several vehicles before coming to rest in a car park outside an Amazon warehouse where the fire was extinguished. Another two people suffered minor injuries.

The FAA said: ’21 Air Flight 7598 overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport around 2pm local time.

‘The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The FAA will investigate.’

Mayor Levine described it as a ‘very difficult day’. She told reporters: ‘We can confirm that we have at least five deceased individuals.

‘Multiple individuals were transported to local hospitals with unknown injuries.’

Kelly Nantel, a spokesperson for Amazon, said in a statement: ‘We’re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today’s incident at Miami International Airport.

‘Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss.

‘The aeroplane, which was operated by 21 Air, was attempting to land when this incident occurred. We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to learn more and will cooperate fully with any investigation.’
