Andrew Garfield has revealed he is “addicted” to his secret Instagram account.

The 43-year-old actor does not have a public social media account, but has now admitted he has a private one that he struggles to stay off.

“I’m as addicted as anybody,” he said in an interview with Variety.

“My screen time notifications are horrific to me. It’s like, I’ve given all of those hours to nothing.

“It’s genuinely enraging because we don’t have as much control over these impulses as we should, and it’s been by design. It’s pretty dark when you look at it.”

Garfield added that the rabbit holes he goes down on the app include “weird ceramics” and “lots of Japanese kind of craftspeople”.

Asked whether he has ever considered a phone detox, he continued: “I think we’ve all had the impulse to smash our phones or throw it into the forest or throw it into the sea because we know it’s taking our lives from us in some way.

“I’m not better than anybody else. I’ve been told, and I find it to be true, that if you leave your phone in another room, that does a lot of the heavy lifting. As soon as it’s in the room, you’re kind of f*****.”

Garfield’s breakout role came in the 2007 TV film Boy A, followed by the films The Social Network and Never Let Me Go, both released in 2010.

However, speaking to Variety, he also said he had thought about leaving his career behind “all the time”.

He said: “I’ve worked a lot this year. I’ve done like 11 months, 12 months, straight back-to-back projects. I want people to see those projects, so I’m gonna have to tell people about them. I get that.

“But if I had my druthers, people would just see them, and I could go whittle wood in the Somerset countryside and think about what the birds might be doing.”

Despite this Garfield’s partner, actress Monica Barbaro, recently called him “one of the best actors of our generation”.

They couple will star together in the upcoming Luca Guadagnino biopic Artificial, about the 2023 firing and rehiring of OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.

Speaking about Garfield, Barbaro told InStyle Magazine earlier this month: “I mean, he’s one of the best actors of his generation, our generation.

“I just learned a lot from his approach to the material and to developing character, and I felt very fortunate to get to witness that in real time.

“I really have to step up my game and make sure I’m a proper, legitimate scene partner.”

Barbaro, 36, known for A Complete Unknown, Crime 101 and Top Gun: Maverick, has been dating Garfield for more than a year after they were first linked in February 2025, and they were photographed together this summer at Wimbledon.
