A familiar Arsenal scoreline did not even vaguely come close to telling the full story.
Mikel Arteta's side were utterly dominant against Napoli. Only poor finishing denied them a more pleasing scoreline than the 1-0 it finished in Naples, after Martin Odegaard finally broke the deadlock.
This was a superb performance to start the Champions League campaign, continuing on from last season when Arsenal won all eight of their league-phase matches.
Repeating that will be no easy task, with a trip to Bayern Munich and home matches against the likes of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund to come.
However, Arsenal will fear no-one. The defence is as impenetrable as ever and the Gunners have started the season with an electric edge in attack, largely down to the return to form of their captain.
Odegaard conducts right-wing masterclass
Arsenal were partying like it was the 2022-23 season at times down their right wing.
In the first-half, 52% of their attacks when down that side. It was just 22% for the left flank, almost neglected in the absence of Riccardo Calafiori.
Almost all the best moments came through the triangle of Odegaard, Saka and White. With Rice drifting over to that side too, the rotations and combinations were too much for Napoli.
Odegaard played a perfect pass through to Saka just before half-time and he curled a terrible finish over the bar when clean through. The only thing worse than the effort was the linesman's decision to give it offside, as replays showed Saka was a couple of yards on.
The theme continued after half-time. Odegaard danced and conducted, all while his team-mates held their own competition for the worst miss.
The Arsenal captain, sublime throughout, scooped a sublime pass over the defence to White. He headed it across goal to Piero Hincapie, and the left-back contrived to balloon it over the bar from two yards out.
If you want something done right, do it yourself. Odegaard is not normally one for brute force but his strike with 15 minutes to go from the edge of the box was just that, hammered in off the inside of the post.
Odegaard is back to his best, scoring, creating and looking like the best player on the pitch, week in, week out.
Nobody could match his 120 touches. Nobody created more than his six chances. Nobody could get near him.
Defensive platform ominous for European rivals
Defend like Arsenal do and you can afford to miss chances. Plenty of them, too.
The Gunners only need to take one and there is an inevitable feel that they will cruise their way to the finish line once in front.
In four games this season, they have now kept three clean sheets. Morgan Rogers' volley is the only strike to have beaten David Raya.
Arsenal's three Premier League matches have seen them concede xG totals of 0.20, 0.33 and 0.35. That is three of the best four defensive showings across the league so far this season.
In Naples, Napoli managed an xG of just 0.22. David Raya did not have a particularly strenuous save to make.
On a night when Barcelona scored five and Paris Saint-Germain netted six, albeit against weaker opposition, Arsenal could well have had a hatful themselves. They registered 26 shots to Napoli's five.
That would have added more of a fair reflection to the scoreline but it was not essential in the end. Arsenal's defensive prowess ensured as much.
Konsa looks right at home
William Saliba's long-term back injury had the potential to derail Arsenal's season before it had even begun.
With Cristhian Mosquera joining him on the sidelines for the last two matches, the Gunners' defence could very well have been looking alarmingly thin a few weeks into the campaign.
That, though, is only a hypothetical thanks to Ezri Konsa, Arsenal's £51m rescue act.
He has slotted seamlessly into the defence and was Arsenal's best player in the opening 45 minutes in Naples.
Konsa stuck out a foot to deny Rasmus Hojlund a near-post finish and then covered out wide to win it back off the rampaging Alisson Santos.
Shortly after, he was making a clever run to the byline and forcing a corner with his cut-back.
