London could be set for a washout over the Bank Holiday weekend, with days of heavy rain and thunder on the forecast.

After a record-setting hot and dry summer, forecasters are now predicting rain will fall every day in the capital until at least the end of next week.

Yellow thunderstorm warnings are in place on Thursday in London, as well as much of the rest of England and Wales.

More rain is set to arrive on Friday, with showers mixed in with occasional sunny spells.

Heavier rain is to come on Saturday, with early sunny spells replaced by cloudy skies, and spells of rain and showers during the afternoon and evening - as well as a risk of more thunder.

Sunday is forecast to see more heavy, thundery showers, before a generally dry but breezy day on Monday with plenty of sunny spells and the odd light shower.

Drivers have been warned of potentially “challenging conditions” over the weekend, which is expected to be the busiest summer bank holiday on the roads in more than a decade.

The RAC has estimated that 20 million leisure trips will be made by car between Friday and Monday - the highest figure since the motoring services company began analysing drivers’ summer bank holiday travel plans in 2015.

Some 10.6 million Britons are planning an overnight trip in the UK during the long weekend, according to VisitEngland data.

RAC breakdown spokeswoman Harriet Hernando said: “The hot spell has given way to thunderstorms in many parts of the country, and that combined with the bank holiday getaway traffic could make for challenging conditions on the roads.

“Flash-flooding could be an issue, so the advice to drivers is to slow down as there’s a very real risk of aquaplaning and losing control.

“This is especially true with tyres that don’t have much tread, or if the vehicle is travelling too fast for the conditions.”
