Barlinnie water problems continue for seventh day

Parts of Barlinnie Prison are still affected by water supply issues, almost a week after problems were first reported.

The Scottish Prison Service told BBC Scotland News most areas of the prison have now suffered disruption to the water supply. The problems began last Thursday.

Several friends or family members of prisoners have contacted the BBC to report difficulties, including days without hot water or even any running water resulting in some prisoners being unable to flush the toilet in their cells.

The SPS said on Sunday that the water supply had been restored but has since admitted there is still disruption.

BBC Scotland has received several messages since Sunday about problems continuing in the prison, which is Scotland's largest.

Concerns include prisoners telling friends and family they still cannot get warm water and are at times unable to flush the toilets in their cells.

The SPS insist those issues have been resolved.

Friends and family also say the problems have disrupted heating in the prison.

Water tankers are still being used to refill the tanks.

The prison has a total of five halls. A Barlinnie spokesperson said "most areas in the prison have been affected in one way or another" since last Thursday.

Concerns have also been raised over the impact of a large amount of water leaking into the ground of the building, which has suffered issues with overcrowding in recent years.

In 2025 inspectors described parts of Barlinnie as being in a "wretchedly poor state" and operating at 30% over capacity.

The 143-year-old facility was found to be housing almost 1,400 prisoners, when it was designed for just 987.

The SPS said investigative and subsequent remedial work remain ongoing at the prison and that it could not yet estimate the volume of water lost there over the past few days.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: "As our estates team have worked through the issues of the last few days, further repair work has been identified.

"While water supply has been restored, and heating and hot water are available, there continues to be some disruption.

"We are grateful to those in our care for their cooperation and understanding."

The Scottish government said ministers are currently monitoring the problems.

A spokesperson said: "We are aware of the continuing water pressure issues at HMP Barlinnie and note that hot water and heating has now been restored, although some disruption persists.

"The Scottish Prison Service is working hard to ensure services get back to normal as quickly as possible, recognises the inconvenience and frustration this has caused for those who live and work in the prison and is grateful for their patience and understanding."

The Scottish government has committed to building a new prison to replace Barlinnie and construction is under way. It is due to be completed in 2028 at a cost of nearly £1bn.
