What we love: Affordable, huge capacity, doubles as an everyday shopper, and on-trend oversized shape

Sometimes simple really is best. Asos’s oversized canvas tote is roomy enough for a weekend away yet costs less than many airport meals. While it lacks the structure and compartments of pricier options, it more than makes up for it with sheer versatility. Australian luggage brand July has quickly become a favourite among organised travellers, and its everyday small duffle is a reliable option. Every pocket feels intentionally placed, from the padded laptop sleeve to the separate shoe compartment, making packing far less chaotic. It's also one of the few soft bags here that feels purpose-built for frequent flyers rather than simply repurposed as a weekend bag.

Expensive and leather requires occasional care

If you're after a cabin bag you'll own for decades, Carl Friedrik delivers. The compact weekender feels every bit as luxurious as its price tag suggests, with supple leather trims, hardwearing recycled nylon and impeccable detailing throughout. Despite its compact dimensions, it easily accommodates a couple of outfits, toiletries and a laptop, making it ideal for overnight business trips or stylish city breaks.

If your priority is avoiding shoulder strain while navigating airports, M&S's Geneva is one of the best-value options around. Rather than hauling a heavy holdall through the terminal, the two-wheel design glides behind you with minimal effort, while the telescopic handle and luggage sleeve make it ideal for pairing with a larger checked suitcase.

The expandable body, packing straps and multiple pockets help maximise space, and despite its compact footprint, it’s surprisingly roomy for weekend trips. Just bear in mind that while it's perfectly sized for easyJet's free underseat allowance, it's a touch too large for Ryanair and Wizz Air's stricter personal item limits.

A seriously underrated bag brand born in London, Roka combines playful designs with practical features and generous sizes. The Marylebone tote bag in strawberry stripe adds instant character to your luggage collection, but doesn’t compromise on functionality. It’s huge – 38.5cm x 67cm x 28.5cm – so is technically larger than all personal bag restrictions, but its relaxed shape can be compressed or overpacked, depending on the airline and ticket.

There’s a padded compartment for your laptop, multiple pockets with zips – including a water bottle holder – and a main zip to keep belongings secure. The exterior is made from water-resistant cotton, and there are two handles for versatility when travelling. The only drawback is that there’s no sleeve to slot it over your suitcase handle. On a trip to Stockholm, I managed to pack in multiple packing cubes, my laptop, books, skincare, make-up and other random items.

Stubble & Co is a seriously underrated bag brand. Anyone who tries their comfortable rucksacks and multifunctional luggage stays loyal. My partner's been using the hybrid backpack on short-haul trips for a year. Despite technically being too large for EasyJet, WizzAir and Ryanair’s strictest personal bag restrictions, he’s always got away with the bag on these airlines – and it safely complies with British Airways’ standard offering, too.

Designed with multiple compartments – including a laptop sleeve, water bottle holder and expandable front pocket – the rucksack boasts a suitcase handle sleeve and a handy clam closure for packing and unpacking with ease. He uses it for work and the gym, too.

Its clean silhouette also means it won't date, making the investment easier to justify.

The Longchamp Le Pliage has achieved cult status for good reason. Equal parts practical and polished, it's the bag you'll spot slung over the shoulders of frequent flyers at every airport terminal. Despite weighing very little, it comfortably swallows everything from a laptop and water bottle to a change of clothes, while the zipped top offers far more security than an open tote.

The genius, however, is its foldable construction: when your holiday shopping threatens to overflow, it packs down into your suitcase before transforming into an extra cabin bag for the journey home. More than 30 years after its debut, it remains one of the smartest travel investments you can make – but also versatile for weekends away or as a work bag.

Take note: Soft-sided design offers less protection than a structured bag, organisation is fairly basic, and the bag needs to be packed carefully to stay within airline sizers when full

A couple of friends have last-minute bought this Ecohub bag from Amazon for short-haul trips. It’s a cheap and reliable bet for breezing by airport gates, complying with even Ryanair’s strictest restrictions. Despite its compact 20L capacity, it comfortably fits the essentials for an overnight or weekend trip, while the removable waterproof pouch is genuinely useful for toiletries or damp swimwear.

Thoughtful extras include the trolley sleeve and fold-flat design, but it doesn't have the rigid structure or extensive internal organisation of premium travel bags. It likely won’t last you beyond five or so trips, but you can’t argue with the value for money.
