Johnson and niece Rhonda shared a close bond, with the actress stepping up as a surrogate parent for her when she was just 16.

Johnson's mother Carol and the star raised Rhonda,  and in a 2014 interview with The Bakersfield Californian, Johnson said, 'For me it was very difficult at first, because I didn't want to have a child.

'But I had to step up to the plate and be her mom and that was difficult, because I was still in school. It didn't matter, because I really loved her. That was the way it was going to be. That's life.'

Johnson added, 'We have a beautiful relationship. It's funny how that works out.

'Sometimes there's some bad along the way, but in the end of it all it's the most wonderful thing, if you fight for it.'

She moved to New York City and started work as a flight attendant, before she was scouted by a modeling agency, landing campaigns for Oscar de la Renta and United Colors of Benetton.

Johnson won the Miss Pennsylvania USA beauty pageant in 1992 and later competed in Miss USA.

She moved to Los Angeles in 1996 and began her acting career.

After welcoming her son in 2003 Johnson stepped away from acting. Her final onscreen appearance was in a 2017 episode of TV series Tucker's War.

In 2011, she started beauty brand SkinGlow by Kimmarie.
