Bill Nighy falls victim to Meta's 'pervert glasses' as he is secretly filmed by YouTube prankster outside cafe

Love Actually star Bill Nighy has fallen victim to Meta's 'pervert glasses' after being covertly recorded by a YouTube prankster.

The actor, 76, is said to have been left 'unsettled' after an encounter with social media influencer Jack Jones, who was wearing the controversial Ray-Ban smart glasses which are fitted with a tiny camera.

Jones, who made his name making fake phone calls, accosted Nighy outside a London cafe and engaged him in conversation, which was recorded without the actor's consent.

The video has been uploaded to Jones' YouTube channel, which has 500,000 subscribers.

In the footage, Jones, wearing the glasses developed by the firm behind Facebook, calls out to Nighy as he stands outside the cafe, saying: 'Excuse me, Bill, I'm going to have to report you.'

The perplexed double-Bafta winner is seen to respond: 'For?'

'For being the best actor in the world,' quips Jack, before asking Nighy questions about his life.

A source close to Nighy has described Jones' behaviour as 'very unpleasant and disrespectful'.

Should influencers be allowed to secretly film strangers for online content without their consent?

What's your view?

It is not the first time Jones has targeted Nighy at what appears to be the same cafe.

In another video, posted two years ago, he surprises the actor from behind by loudly saying, 'Good afternoon, Philip' – a reference to his character in 2004 comedy Shaun Of The Dead.

Among a string of comments from viewers of the footage, the stunt was branded 'vile' and 'a horrible thing to do'.

A year later, Jones uploaded another clip entitled 'Me and Bill Nighy have squashed the beef', showing him presenting flowers to the actor by way of apology.

There has been widespread criticism over the use of the Meta glasses to film without consent.

As well as being used by online content creators, they have been exploited by stalkers and harassers, gaining them the label 'pervert glasses'.

Numerous venues and businesses, including Wetherspoon pubs, theatres and schools, have banned them.

In August, ministers in Australia and Norway revealed they were considering banning and regulating wearable gadgets with cameras.

Jones, 33, made his name in the mid-2010s for prank videos that included honking horns behind people in the street and telling people they had a spider on their shoulder.

Responding to the latest video of Nighy, Jones insisted that he had the actor's consent to upload the recording.

He said: 'I approached Bill while I was filming content using the Meta glasses.

'I explained that I had been filming and showed him the type of content I create, which is mainly positive videos involving flowers, kindness and doing nice things for people.

'Bill was very nice about it and seemed to like what I was doing. There was no intention to make him look bad or embarrass him in any way.

'The whole purpose of my content is to create positive moments and spread a bit of kindness, and that's exactly the context of the interaction.'
