British influencer facing death penalty in Dubai for stabbing her boyfriend with kitchen knife is 'suffering terribly' in notorious jail

A British influencer facing the death penalty for stabbing her boyfriend to death with a kitchen knife is 'suffering terribly' in a notorious Dubai jail.

Brooke George was arrested at Dubai International Airport on June 21, the day after she allegedly murdered her boyfriend William Treeby, 26, following an argument.

The TikTok influencer claimed to have grabbed the knife in self defence when Mr Treeby assaulted her in his apartment, her legal team said.

Following her arrest, the 23-year-old from Gravesend, Kent, was charged with murder and is now being held in the notorious Bur Dubai police station, UAE, ahead of her delayed death penalty trial.

But the detention centre is said to be taking a devastating toll on George, according to her mother Tess.

The 55-year-old claims there is bright, sterile lighting in every room, babies' screams echo through the centre and phone calls are frequently interrupted.

George's family fear that the abhorrent conditions in the police station are causing her mental health to rapidly deteriorate.

But her stay in the centre has been extended until October 28 after prosecution witnesses failed to appear via video link at a court hearing on October 7 and the case was adjourned.

Detained in Dubai founder Radha Stirling, who is supporting George's family, said that she is 'suffering terribly' inside the centre.

'Her family describes a young woman who is increasingly upset, unable to sleep and struggling to maintain even the briefest contact with home,' she said.

'Her mother is left wondering how much worse things will become before she hears her daughter’s voice again.'

Ms Stirling said that phone calls often last mere minutes before they are abruptly disconnected.

'For Brooke, those calls are a lifeline. For her family, they are the only opportunity to hear how she is coping and offer some reassurance.'

She added that the detention centre was not designed to hold people for prolonged periods of time.

'British citizens who were locked up there for only hours during the Iran strikes were terrified at the thought of spending days there, let alone months,' she said.

'Whatever the allegations, she is entitled to humane treatment while her case is heard.'

George, who formerly worked at John Lewis, said Mr Treeby lured her to Dubai, promising her a modelling career and luxuries before confiscating her passport.

She claimed that he became violent when she booked a flight back to the UK, prompting her to stab him with a knife in self-defence.

George is not the first British tourist to have been held in the notorious detention centre in the Gulf city.

In 2011, British tourist Lee Bradley Brown died in the police station after he was arrested following a verbal altercation with a housekeeper at the luxury Burj Al Arab hotel.

It was claimed that he choked to death on his own vomit but a jury inquest in 2022 revealed severe beatings from guards and inmates killed him.
