Burst main interrupts water supplies in Ayrshire town for two days

A burst main has led to water supplies being interrupted for two days in an Ayrshire town.

Supply issues were reported in Kilwinning on Saturday morning, and Scottish Water worked through the night to repair the burst main.

It said "significant progress" had been made, but the repair was more complex with a "potential secondary" issue affecting a valve.

Scottish Water said it was not possible to say when supplies would fully resume, with tankers being used to bring in extra water and a bottled water collection point at Kilwinning Academy.

The valve issue is mainly impacting those in the north and east of the town.

It said it was essential to complete the additional work to make sure any underlying problems were fixed before supplies could be fully restored.

However, customers may continue to experience intermittent or fluctuating water supplies.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: "Our teams are working as quickly and safely as possible to repair this burst water main and fully restore normal service to all affected customers.

"We appreciate that this disruption is frustrating and apologise for the ongoing inconvenience."

Anyone who requires a delivery of water bottles is asked to contact Scottish Water.

Restaurants and community centres have posted on social media saying they have been forced to close due to the issue.
