A cancer charity worker who stole nearly £92,000 from his employer to pay for his wedding and honeymoon has been jailed.

Tameem Choudhury, 29, exploited his role at Breast Cancer Now to redirect a payment intended for the charity into his own bank account, according to City of London police.

Mr Choudhury, from Hackney, was jailed for two-and-a-half years on Tuesday at the Royal Courts of Justice, after pleading guilty to charges of fraud and money laundering.

In August 2023, Mr Choudhury intercepted a refund payment of £91,966.72 from The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust.

He then used his corporate email address to forward details for his personal bank account to the trust, presented on Breast Cancer Now letterhead.

Within weeks of receiving the money, Mr Choudhury spent it on wedding and honeymoon costs, settling debts, and luxury items, including an Alexander Brown ring valued at £14,000, the force added.

The investigation also found evidence linking the stolen funds to flights to Qatar and transfers to relatives.

Detective Constable Yusuf Meerza, from the City of London Police fraud operations team, said that Mr Choudhury "abused a position of trust" inside the charity.

He added: "The generosity of donors enables charities such as Breast Cancer Now to support vital research and provide help to those affected by breast cancer.

"Choudhury’s actions betrayed that trust and placed charitable funds at risk for his own personal gain."

Messages recovered by the police from Mr Choudhury’s phone showed he had described himself as "borderline broke" shortly before committing the crime.

A total of £42,866 was recovered from Mr Choudhury’s account after it was frozen by his bank when suspicious activity was detected.

He was arrested in June last year after Breast Cancer Now reported him to the police.

Breast Cancer Now, established in 2015, finances research into the disease, and offers sufferers opportunities to speak to specialist nurses, join support groups and access help and resources.

"Funds have been recovered and the charity has not experienced any financial loss."
