Chancellor urges Welsh government to give people £100 for energy bills

The chancellor has urged the Welsh government to implement a £100 "household energy payment" to council taxpayers.

John Healey said 20 million homes in council tax bands A-D in England would get the payment as he called on Welsh ministers to do the same for Wales.

He also announced £30m extra to fund a new train station in the east of Cardiff.

The UK government said the Welsh government, which funds public services in Wales including the NHS, would get an extra £450m over three years.

Plaid Cymru, which runs Wales' government, said the plans risked the "kind of spending reductions Wales experienced during the worst years of Tory cuts".

Healey's energy payment for England was among the measures in the Budget package announced on Wednesday.

The chancellor said the payment, aimed at tackling the cost of living crisis, would be allocated to devolved governments in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It is thought that between 70 to 75% of Welsh household are in the A-D council tax band.

The Welsh government has been asked to comment.
