The bodies of six people have been found after a small byplane crashed over a forest in Wisconsin.
Investigators are looking into how a fixed-wing Piper, flying back from Kenosha to Menomonie, came to crash over a forest with five adults and a child on board.
They are probing if a freak weather event could have caused the plane to come down at 9.40pm over a densely wooded area in Dellona, Sauk County.
Before the crash, the aircraft was reported to be in contact with a nearby air traffic control tower, police said.
When police arrived, several neighbours were already searching the area after seeing a low-flying plane.

In the desperate search for survivors, all 6 passengers were found but declared dead at the scene.
Police said that identities of those involved are being withheld at this time.
There were no injuries to anyone on the ground.

Aaron Smith described hearing the sound of the plane flying low over his house and a ‘bright white light’.
He said: ‘After 9, we had light rain and a few flashes of light from what I thought was lightning.
‘There was a really bright flash and after that I heard an aircraft and thought “uh oh…somebody was up there”.
‘The plane sounded in bad shape it made this pulsing whir-whir-whir sound.
‘It got so loud I thought it would hit my house and I think it passed really close over my neighbour’s house.
‘From my porch I watched the white light continue southeast before crashing. Then the pulsing stopped.
