A man who drugged and raped a 12-year-old girl has been jailed for nine years.

According to South Yorkshire Police, the victim had been missing from home and was found in the company of Adam Batley, who was 28 at the time.

Batley, now 30 and from Barnsley, was arrested and the girl later disclosed the abuse she had suffered, including being plied with drink and drugs, to her social workers.

Batley, who was sentenced on Wednesday, was ordered to serve a nine-year jail term, with an extended licence period of 12 months on release.

He was also handed a barring order, an indefinite restraining order and was told to sign the sex offender register indefinitely.

South Yorkshire Police said following his arrest, Batley showed no remorse and answered "no comment" in interviews.

He pleaded not guilty to rape of a child under the age of 13 but was found guilty following a trial on 31 July.

Det Con Alessio Godhard, who was the officer in charge of the case, said: "No words can explain just how brave the girl was during this whole process, from her initial disclosure, through to the sentencing at court.

"Batley preyed on her vulnerabilities and used this to gain personal satisfaction."

Godhard said the victim would continue to be supported by a specialist team and colleagues from social care and urged victims of sexual abuse to report it to police.

"We take any report of sexual abuse seriously - you will be believed and listened to," he said.

"Please report it to us so we can investigate and get these dangerous offenders behind bars."
