Convicted killer found guilty of murdering Uddingston man

A mug shot of a man with no hair and a faint moustache. His mouth is a gap.

A convicted killer has been found guilty of the murder of a man during a brutal machete attack.

Liam Kippen, 31, struck David Graham, 38, in Uddingston before the victim's wife went to his aid and screamed for help for her dying husband.

Kippen lied that he only hit David – a relative stranger to him – because he was apparently armed and feared he was going to be assaulted.

He was found guilty of murder following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Jurors were then told Kippen jailed was for the culpable homicide of a man in 2016.

Judge Lord Harrower told Kippen: "What started as an ordinary day for David Graham and his wife ended in tragedy leaving an incalculable void in the lives of his family."

The court heard that, after the attack, Kippen fled the scene. The weapon was dumped in a river before he spent the night in a hotel drinking beer.

Smiling headshot of David Graham

The court heard Graham had been out with his wife Donna that afternoon.

The victim remembered he had left a door open at his late father's home, so he went there. It was on getting to the house in Uddingston that he was fatally attacked.

Donna Graham told jurors she got a call from her husband's number, but all she initially heard was "a lot of noise", leaving her "confused".

She believed there was also mention of "call the police".

Graham's wife immediately went to where she thought her husband would be and heard shouting.

The witness recalled seeing her husband running and someone "chasing" him.

She initially thought the other person – Kippen - had a golf club. David was then struck by the killer.

Jurors were shown a video that she managed to capture of Kippen moments after the attack.

She began frantically banging on doors and calling for help.

'I did not want this'

Kippen told the court he had been outside the home of a man who David and his family had previous "difficulties" with.

The convicted killer claimed he was "scared" and his "adrenaline" was going as Graham apparently came running towards the property.

Kippen said his friend gave him a weapon. He claimed he had nowhere to run and feared he was going to "end up dead".

Tony Graham KC, defending, asked whether it was intention to hurt Graham.

Kippen replied: "I did not want any of this. I was defending myself. I did not think this would happen."

He claimed it was only later that he discovered on the news that David had died.

Prosecutor Leanne McQuillan later said to Kippen that the victim did not have a knife and was running away when he was struck.

Two other men - Hugh McBean, 30, and James Cairney, 43 - were found guilty of attempting to defeat the ends of justice by assisting Kippen after the attack.

All three men were remanded in custody and are due to be sentenced next month.
