What will Zack Polanski do now?

Zack Polanski is speaking to reporters following his defeat in the by-election.

When asked if he’ll stay on, he replied: “Of course I can carry on”, while denying that he had lost control of his party.

“What just happened in Holborn and St Pancras is we just over tripled our vote share. What I’ve seen is people excited about our plans for rent controls, tackling the climate crisis and nationalising Thames Water,” he said.

He added that eyes will turn to Andy Burnham to see how he fares now that Labour has been given another “chance” in Holborn and St Pancras.

He said he would stay on at the helm of the Greens, because “that’s what leaders do.”

Zack Polanski is about to arrive at the count here in St Pancras as the Greens conceded defeat to Labour.

The official declaration is expected in the next hour.

A Green Party spokesperson said: "It is clear now we will come a close second in this by-election. Taking the fight to Labour in one of its safest seats shows just how far the Greens have come.

“Voters want us to keep Labour’s feet to the fire on affordable housing, public ownership of water and the climate crisis. Greens will be there every single day, holding Labour to account and demanding the change people voted for."
