A fundraising appeal to help the families of two police officers killed in a head-on crash has closed after climbing to more than £1.2m.

It was set up by Cleveland Police Federation following the deaths of PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough in a collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough on 22 August, which also killed five young men.

The funds will be split equally between the officers' families for them to do with as they wish.

The federation described the public response as "truly overwhelming", adding: "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has stood behind both families during such an unimaginably difficult time."

The two officers were in a marked armed response police car that was hit by a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 at South Bank in the early hours.

The fundraiser was opened in the hours after the crash and had raised £1,203,932 by the time it closed on Tuesday morning.

Secretary of Cleveland Police Federation Carl Baker said: "There are simply not enough words to properly thank everyone for what you have done.

"The kindness and generosity shown by people across the country and beyond has meant an enormous amount.

"Every donation, every share and every message of support has contributed to the incredible response for Matt and Tom's families."

PC Blades' wife called the father of two "our superhero", and said: "He gave his life in the line of duty, protecting and serving others with courage, dedication and selflessness."

Former soldier PC Clough had been described by his family as "our hero" who was "always on public duty".

They said he "jumped into action whenever needed, and [was] willing to help anyone for any reason".
