A "dangerous" crocodilian has been recovered from a suburban home after reports it was being kept without a licence.

The spectacled caiman, classified as dangerous under the Dangerous Wild Animal Act 1976, was seized from a semi-detached house in Hale, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday.

Lyle the caiman was found, along with a python, after a Trafford Council-led operation also involving police and the RSPCA. Both animals have since been moved to a zoo, said the council.

"These animals have highly specialised needs that are incredibly difficult to meet in a domestic setting," said RSPCA exotic animal expert Evie Button. "Their welfare can be severely compromised when they are kept as pets."

"We're pleased that both reptiles are now receiving specialist care but we remain deeply concerned that so many dangerous wild animals continue to be kept in private hands across Britain," she added.

The caiman was discovered in an enclosure with water when environmental health officers - along with police and the RSPCA - executed a warrant at the property at about 11:00 BST.

Both animals were taken for assessment by police under the Animal Welfare Act and cared for by a specialist vet before being transferred to a zoo.

"Thanks to the work of our environmental health team and partners the caiman has been carefully removed," said Trafford Councillor Keleigh Glenton.

"Species like this require sensitive, expert handling and proper environments and as such we require any owner to hold a Dangerous Wild Animal Licence.

"We do not hesitate to take decisive action when rules are not adhered to."
