Davey remains Lib Dem leader after marathon meeting with MPs

Sir Ed Davey has seen off a potential challenge to his leadership of the Liberal Democrats after a reported attempt to topple him failed to materialise on Tuesday evening.
Lib Dem MP Charlie Maynard quit his frontbench role last week, with reports suggesting the move was intended to trigger a vote of confidence in Sir Ed’s leadership.
But after a marathon meeting of the parliamentary party on Tuesday, no vote took place and Sir Ed remained in post.

Deputy party leader Daisy Cooper said: “There is overwhelming support for Ed in the parliamentary party and a real sense that we need to come together as a group.
“We are passionate about the crucial role we play in stopping the Conservatives and Reform UK from forming the most right-wing government in our history.
“We will continue to put together a platform for the next general election focusing on the issues that matter most to people across our country.”
Mr Maynard’s resignation came amid reported frustration with the party’s lack of progress since the 2024 election that saw it secure a record 72 MPs.
Since then, the party has gained little ground in the polls, with the latest YouGov survey putting the Liberal Democrats on 11% – just below their share in 2024.
