Comedian Dawn French has been disqualified from driving for six months for speeding.

The Vicar of Dibley star pleaded guilty to exceeding the 30mph limit on a restricted road in England, court officials confirmed.

The 68-year-old was captured by an automatic camera on 11 July last summer. She was banned from driving for six months at a hearing at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The actress was also fined £600 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £240 and £90 court costs, the court said.

According to reports, Ms French, who is best known for playing vicar Geraldine Granger in the hit BBC One series, already had nine points on her licence at the time.

Accumulating 12 or more penalty points in three-year period triggers at automatic six month driving ban.

Drivers who are disqualified for 56 days or more must apply to the DVLA for a new licence to start driving again.

Other celebrities convicted of speeding offences include Harry Potter star Emma Watson, who was handed a six-month ban last summer for speeding.

The actress, 35, best known for playing Hermione Granger in the film franchise, also had to pay a total of £1,044 after driving her blue Audi at 38mph in a 30mph zone in Oxford on 31 July 2024.

Watson, who has been studying at the University of Oxford, had nine points on her licence before the speeding incident occurred.

Speaking on the On Purpose podcast with Jay Shetty last year about the ban, which made headlines at the time, Watson said: “I was getting phone calls, like it’s on the BBC. It’s on international, worldwide news.

“I was like, my shame is everywhere.”

She said in her career working in films she was not permitted to drive herself to work, adding: “So I went from basically only driving myself on weekends or during a holiday, to then, when I became a student, driving myself all the time and I did not have the experience, or skills clearly, which I now will and do.”
