A disqualified driver has been jailed for a "crime spree" spate of offences, including stealing two cars, five jars of coffee, and two bottles of whiskey.

An investigation by South Wales Police found Liam McDonald, 35, of no fixed abode, committed several crimes in and around Cardiff across three weeks in July.

He previously pleaded guilty to numerous offences, including two counts of driving while disqualified, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving, and using a vehicle without third-party insurance.

On Friday, McDonald was sentenced to a year and nine months at Cardiff Crown Court. He was also banned from driving for three years.

The court heard McDonald began his crime spree on 8 July, when he stole five jars of coffee from inside a B&M in Leckwith, Cardiff.

Two days later, a car was then reported stolen from an address in Cardiff.

Following CCTV enquiries, a man on a bike – now known to be McDonald – was identified as being responsible for stealing the car. Two days later, the car was found abandoned between Sloper Road and Leckwith Road.

McDonald then stole two bottles of whiskey worth £119 from a Waitrose in Pontprennau on 21 July.

His activities were eventually brought to an end on 27 July, following a report about another car that had just been stolen.

Officers were searching for the car when it was spotted driving towards them.

Despite McDonald driving "dangerously" in his attempt to drive away, officers were eventually able to box in the car and safely arrest McDonald, where he was then linked to the earlier offences.

Investigating officer PC Paul Griffiths said McDonald's crimes "had a big impact on the people and businesses in his communities".

"He also put people on the road at risk that day driving in the manner that he did and without a licence," he added.
