A driver has been banned from the roads for six months after an unsecured object flew off the the roof of his car and smashed through the windscreen of a police vehicle responding to an emergency.

Glenn Lillie, 34, was travelling along the A120 near Little Canfield in Essex when a large item detached from his white Audi, cleared the central barrier, and struck the marked patrol car on the opposite carriageway.

The impact shattered the windscreen, showering the driver and passenger with glass, the force said.

The officer driving managed to bring the vehicle to a controlled halt, averting what police described as potentially catastrophic consequences.

Essex Police launched an investigation, using camera footage and a forensic examination of the debris left on the carriageway to trace the vehicle back to Lillie’s address in Braintree.

At the time, the incident forced the temporary closure of the westbound carriageway while emergency services cleared the wreckage.

Appearing at Colchester Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, Lillie pleaded guilty to three charges relating to driving a vehicle involving a danger of injury, alongside two counts of failing to stop and failing to report an accident.

He was handed a six-month driving disqualification and a 12-month community order requiring 140 hours of unpaid work. The court also ordered him to pay £244 in costs and surcharges.

PC Simon Bailey, of Essex Police, said the collision could have proved fatal without the composure of the officer behind the wheel.

“Every driver has a responsibility to make sure anything they carry is properly secured before starting a journey,” PC Bailey said. “This incident is a stark demonstration of how dangerous an insecure load can become.”

Road safety campaigners have stressed that the case highlights a persistent and preventable danger on Britain's high-speed road networks.
