Ireland–Israel nations League clash overshadowed by political tensions

England captain Harry Kane marked his record-equalling 125th appearance with a brace as Thomas Tuchel’s men all but secured their place in the Nations League knockouts with a 3-0 win against Czechia.

The 33-year-old has achieved all manner of milestones during his remarkable international career and tied Peter Shilton as the country’s most-capped men’s player as he clocked up another on Tuesday.

Kane celebrated this latest landmark with a standout display against Czechia, with the skipper’s fizzing cross forcing a Vladimir Coufal own goal before England’s all-time top goalscorer finished off a lovely team move.

The irrepressible Bayern Munich sharpshooter hit the crossbar after the break but would not have to wait long to extend his record national team tally as he headed home a corner to take his tally to 91.

Kane could well be a Ballon d’Or winner when he lines up for his record-breaking appearance next month at home to third-placed Croatia, who trail Tuchel’s team by six points with two Group A3 games to play.

Record breaker: Harry Kane

Given the top two qualify for March’s quarter-finals, and with head-to-head record the first tie-breaker, Slaven Bilic’s side would need to better England’s 7-0 win in Rijeka to take it into the final fixture.

The England boss made four alterations from the side that sparkled in Croatia, with Trent Alexander-Arnold among those brought in at Wembley.

Back in Tuchel’s plans after 15 months in the international wilderness, the Real Madrid star forced Czechia goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek into action with a wicked 30-yard free-kick.

England showed none of the shakiness they had displayed in the opening stages of last Tuesday’s 2-0 win in Prague as Kane and Jude Bellingham showed their class during a dominant start.

Morgan Rogers and Elliot Anderson had wayward attempts as the World Cup bronze medallists patiently probed, with the opener arriving in the 27th minute in unfortunate fashion for Coufal.

Kane fired over a lovely, skipping cross from the right and the former West Ham full-back blasted into his own net having been unsettled by Eberechi Eze.

There were some chuckles when the replay was shown on Wembley’s big screens, with a gasp following when Anderson blazed over the chance for a quickfire second.

The Manchester City midfielder helped atone for that miss with his role in a wonderful Kane goal in the 40th minute.

Anderson met a pass with a fine clipped ball down the right, where Rogers’ equally impressive first-time cross was swept home from close range by skipper Kane.

England were having fun and playing some lovely football.

Myles Lewis-Skelly showed wonderful skill shortly after collecting a booking that rules him out of the Croatia game and switched to Alexander-Arnold, who fed Kane to hit the bar from 20 yards.

Bellingham saw a flick blocked by Hornicek and the resulting corner brought a third, with Lewis Hall’s high set-piece met by Kane with a header into the ground and inside the far post.

Tuchel began making changes with the outcome certain. Bellingham was among those withdrawn, with the star receiving a huge ovation and slap on the bottom from Tuchel.

There was a collective intake of breath when substitute Roman Macek whizzed a long-range effort narrowly wide on a rare voyage forward by Czechia.

Kane received a standing ovation when replaced by Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the 82nd minute, sparking an exodus for what proved a drama-free conclusion to a promising four-match autumn camp.
