Thomas Tuchel has said he could imagine England’s Manchester City players were distracted against Spain, though has ultimately agreed with Harry Kane.

Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi and Elliot Anderson all started for England in their Nations League opener at home to the reigning world and European champions on Saturday evening.

The trio were selected by Tuchel just over 24 hours after Man City were reportedly found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges brought against them by the Premier League over breaches of its financial regulations.

Both O’Reilly and Guehi were at fault for two of Spain’s goals at Wembley Stadium as the Three Lions fell to a 3-2 defeat, prompting suggestions they might have been distracted by, arguably, the biggest news in Premier League history.

Speaking to ITV Sport after the game, England captain Kane dismissed that notion: “There was a discussion, but at the end of the day when we're with England, that's been a big plus for us, we kind of put club football to one side, and it was no different this week.”

The same question was put to Tuchel and while he he had a slightly different response to Kane, he agreed that the players were not distracted by the news.

He said: “Not for me, but I can imagine maybe for the Manchester City players. For me not and I will not comment on that because it is an ongoing court case so I will not give any comment.

“I didn’t make it a topic. It was not a topic for me. I hear the news as the latest person in camp.

“I was just thinking about Spain and training and meetings and individual meetings and team meetings. Not for me.

“For the players, they have more time than me. They have one training session, so I can imagine they talk about it. It is good that they do and I didn’t feel they were distracted.”
