Lewis Hall is a potential doubt for England’s Wembley clash with world champions Spain after missing training on Wednesday.

England face Spain on Saturday at the national stadium as they open their account in a new Nations League campaign. They then face Croatia (home and away) and Czechia in the following ten days.

There were 23 players involved in Wednesday’s training session led by head coach Thomas Tuchel, with Newcastle United left-back Hall the only absentee.

England Under-19 internationals Kaden Braithwaite of Manchester City and Malachi Hardy of Tottenham were invited by Tuchel to join in with the seniors’ training session on Wednesday to help get the numbers up.

On Monday, Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner were given late call-ups after five players dropped out of the camp due to minor injuries.

As well as Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Arsenal’s Declan Rice, there were withdrawals from Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Tino Livramento.

Tuchel will be expected to go as strong for the visit of Spain to Wembley on Saturday as in any of the following three matches the next ten days.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the only out-and-out right-back in the squad, but Tuchel could call on versatile Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jarell Quansah in the opposition if he wants more defensive solidity.

“I will not tell you, of course,” Tuchel said on Friday when asked whether Alexander-Arnold might start against Spain.

“He will fights with Jarell Quansah for the position. That’s what the competition is.”

The absences of Rice, Mainoo, Jordan Henderson and Reece James could provide an opportunity for a fresh midfield partner for Elliot Anderson. Myles Lewis-Skelly or the highly rated Alex Scott of Bournemouth are contenders, while Jude Bellingham could potentially move further back and allow a different attacking midfielder to start at No10.

If captain and Ballon d’Or favourite Harry Kane features in all four matches over the coming two weeks, he will draw level with Peter Shilton as England men’s all-time most-capped player.
