A fallen power line may have caused a grass fire which broke out in Moray earlier this week, it has emerged.

Firefighters spent the night near the Moray village of Hopeman after the blaze broke out on Tuesday afternoon.

Six appliances and a wildfire unit were sent to the scene.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said it believed an overhead line coming down may have "contributed" to the incident.

SSEN said in a statement it was working closely with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) following a fault on the network in the Hopeman area on Tuesday afternoon.

"The fault resulted in an overhead power line falling to the ground, and we believe this potentially contributed to the fire which has affected crops and gorse in the area," SSEN said.

"Our rapid response teams were on site quickly to aid the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and we isolated parts of the network to help their work in extinguishing the fire.

"The cause of this fault is currently under investigation."

The statement added: "We'd like to apologise to customers who lost power due to this incident, and to other people who were inconvenienced."

Footage had shown flames and dense smoke next to a campsite, containing campervans and caravans.
