A persistent fare dodger was caught red-handed at a northeast London station after racking up almost £4,000 worth of unpaid trips.
Freeloading passengers brazenly barging through the barriers is a common sight in the capital, and frustrating for commuters paying a large chunk of their income on travel.
But prolific fare dodgers continue to be caught by rail companies and Transport for London using sophisticated tools to flag irregularities and suspicious activity.
Channel 5’s Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law has featured some of the most outrageous ticket louts, including a man who was spotted by the system for hundreds of fare evasions.
Footage from the hit reality series shows TfL’s investigator Lisa close in on the suspect at Seven Kings station.
Lisa and the enforcement team confront the man wanted for a staggering 530 counts of fare evasion, worth around £3,700 in unpaid tickets.
He is said to have tapped in and out using his uncle’s contactless card, which was later found to be broken.
Footage shows the unnamed man admitting to Lisa that he used his uncle’s card, and claiming that it stopped working after he had gone to Georgia.
She asks: ‘Why are you using it on the train then?’
He then insists he only used the faulty card for a day, but Lisa tells him ‘not to lie’ before showing him the CCTV footage and pages of travel history.
She warns him that ‘this is very very serious’ before proceeding to lay out the ‘overwhelming’ evidence.
He appears to be panicking after the scale of evidence, with Lisa telling him to ‘breathe’ after the amount he owes is put to the man, who later apologises to the team.
The man reportedly pleaded guilty in court and was fined £40 and £275 compensation and £275 costs, according to the Standard.
The technique when a suspect repeatedly uses an invalid or declined card for contactless card payment (CPC) can be spotted by the sophisticated ITAP system and flagged to investigators.
TfL said it is checking more passengers who use contactless payment, with over five million CPCs checked in the 2024/25 financial year. This generated £2.2 million in charges from people travelling without a valid contactless card.
It is estimated to recover around £190 million lost to fare evasion which could be invested into the network.
During the 2024/25 financial year, more than 4,100 people were prosecuted for pushing through gates.
