A man who died after plunging into a canal while being chased by police at the Notting Hill Carnival has been named and pictured for the first time.
Police officers had attempted to stop Karnell Kelly, 25, on Monday during the final day of the iconic celebration.
He was chased and entered the Grand Union Canal at Meanwhile Gardens.
Canal boat owners and police battled to save him after dragging him from the water.
Officers then gave him emergency first aid at the scene before he was taken to the hospital by ambulance.
Mr Kelly was pronounced dead a short time later.
A family member told : ‘We are devastated, he was a wonderful person who loved his family.’
An investigation into the circumstances of the death has been launched.
Commander Claire Smart said: ‘This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who has lost his life.’
The Met Police said officers had attempted to stop Karnell on Harrow Road on Monday afternoon.
Mr Kelly and a police officer were injured while in the water, and police divers were sent in on Wednesday to investigate the canal to establish the cause.
Smart added: ‘Any death following contact with the police is passed to the Independent Office for Police Conduct so the circumstances can be fully investigated.
‘I would encourage everyone to avoid speculation while this work takes place. I acknowledge the efforts of the officers and members of the public who entered the canal to rescue this man. I know they will be devastated that his life couldn’t ultimately be saved.’
The watchdog Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has opened its own investigation into the death as officers had chased him before his death.
Amanda Rowe, IOPC director of engagement, said: ‘Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Karnell Kelly and everyone affected by his death.
‘We need to independently establish the exact circumstances of this incident given that he has died following an interaction with police officers.’
