Four arrested after police officer shot in foot in Nottingham

Four people have been arrested after a police officer was shot in the foot in Nottingham city centre.

The officer was struck by a projectile believed to have been fired from a shotgun after approaching two suspects in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Nottinghamshire police said on Monday the officer remained in a stable condition in hospital.

The two suspects fled the scene in Angel Row after the shooting at 4.50am on Sunday, sparking a nationwide police search.

Nottinghamshire police said on Monday that four people had been arrested, including a 27-year-old woman on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

A man, 24, and woman, 25, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, after police pulled over their car in the Radford area of Nottingham on Sunday night.

Another man, 30, was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, after police stopped a car in Bedfordshire in the early hours of Monday. All four were in police custody and being questioned by detectives.

The Nottinghamshire assistant chief constable Claire Rukas said: "A team of experienced detectives continues to work tirelessly to establish exactly what happened before, during and after this appalling incident. I am pleased that four arrests have now been made and hope this provides some reassurance to the public as those detained are questioned in connection with the discharge of the firearm.

"The injured officer continues to recover in hospital and is receiving support from colleagues and loved ones. We ask that his privacy is respected at this time. Our thoughts remain with him, and with his family, friends and colleagues, who have all been affected by this deeply shocking incident."
