A tribute to one of Britain’s most iconic rock stars has been unveiled at Wembley Park to mark what would have been Freddie Mercury’s 80th birthday.

The mural, depicting the Queen frontman, has been hand-sprayed and applied to vinyl by street artist Frank Styles.

It now adorns Wembley Park’s Spanish Steps, the pedestrian link between Wembley Stadium and OVO Arena Wembley, formerly known as Wembley Arena.

Standing 30ft tall, the artwork was created as four separate pieces before being brought together to form a single anamorphic image spanning all 58 of the Spanish Steps.

Mercury remains one of the most celebrated performers in rock history, renowned for his extraordinary voice, flamboyant stage presence and ability to command a crowd.

“It’s been an honour to once again work with Wembley Park to deliver this tribute to the one and only, Freddie Mercury,” Mr Styles said.

“As a trained graphic designer himself, Freddie was very aware and precise about the visual feel and so I have endeavoured to follow his ethos in the conscious creation of this mural.”

Wembley Park’s Head of Cultural Programming Claudio Giambrone, who commissioned and curated the mural tribute, added: “Freddie Mercury’s relationship with Wembley goes far beyond a single famous performance.

“Some of Queen’s most extraordinary moments happened here and generations of fans continue to associate Freddie with Wembley. For his 80th birthday, we wanted to create something that gives fans a new place in Wembley where they can come together and remember him.”
