Freddie Meredith has joined the cast of Saturday Night Live UK ahead of season two.

The comedian is known for playing Seb in Such Brave Girls and Marcus in Big Boys.

Last month the comedian made his debut at Edinburgh Fringe, where he was nominated for the best newcomer award with his show Need A Light?

Speaking about joining SNL UK, he said: “It’s a no-brainer, it’s the most iconic comedy show and it looks like so much fun.

“It will undoubtedly inform everything I do for the rest of my career and I can’t wait for the experience. It’s SNL!”

Meredith trained at drama school before he began working professionally in theatre.

He said: “Over time, I found myself increasingly drawn to comedy and started doing stand‑up alongside my acting work, and that naturally led me into making short sketches online.”

Meredith will be joining the 11 other cast members – Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi and Paddy Young.

The first episode of the new season will be hosted by American actor Jeff Goldblum, 73, while the musical guest will be Irish singer CMAT, 30.

The British incarnation of NBC sketch comedy show SNL premiered in March, with each episode seeing a different host take to the stage each week alongside the inaugural cast, and a performance from a musical guest.

The series debuted with SNL veteran Tina Fey as host, who was followed by The Fall actor Jamie Dornan, Bait star Riz Ahmed, comedian Jack Whitehall, Derry Girls actress Nicola Coughlan, Sex Education star Aimee Lou Wood, Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham and then Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa.

Broadcast live each week, the show will once again welcome a different celebrity host and musical guest for every episode, alongside topical sketches, live music performances and a British take on the Weekend Update segment.

Saturday Night Live creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels previously said he was “incredibly proud” of the team and the show, which “keeps getting better every week”.

The show’s US version has been running since 1975 and is responsible for launching the careers of the likes of Fey, Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy.
