September is almost over, and it’s been a busy month for UK high street closures as hundreds of shops and restaurants shut their doors for good.

The beginning of the month saw the closure of Foreways, a chain of corner shops, followed by over a dozen former WH Smith shops – now known as TG Jones.

Hundreds of restaurants also closed, most owned by Premier Inn operator Whitbread. This sadly included Brewers Fayre, Beefeater, and several other pub and bar chains.

 has compiled a list of all the closures for September 2026, so you can check if your local shop, bar or restaurant has been affected.

Almost 20 TG Jones shops, formerly known as WH Smith, closed this month as part of restructuring plans to stop the chain from falling into administration.

Modella Capital, the owner behind TG Jones and other shops like Hobbycraft, confirmed that 150 locations of the stationery and bookshop chain will close.

A total of 19 have been confirmed so far, 11 of which have already shut:

A small chain of mini-supermarkets and corner shops known as Foreways also closed five branches in Carlisle, Cumbria, after operating under the Premier group for nearly 40 years.

Wynsors, formerly known as Wynsors World of Shoes, has this month announced the closure of 17 shops across the UK, with closing-down sales launched across all affected stores.

The shops announced to close, although no official date has been confirmed, include:

According to The Sun, the retail chain issued a statement, reading: ‘It’s with sadness that we announce that certain Wynsors stores will be closing their doors.

‘We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our customers who have shopped with us and supported the store over the years. Your support has meant so much to the whole team.’

Which restaurants have closed this month?

Over 260 restaurants, bars and pub chains closed this month, all operated by Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn.

The closures were confirmed at the beginning of the month as the company pivots to replace all standalone restaurant chains with an ‘integrated food and beverage offer’.

As part of Whitbread’s plans, a total of 106 Beefeater restaurants closed this month, including:

Another Whitbread chain that closed all of its branches this month was Bar+ Block, which operated 20 sites. The branches closed on September 3, and they included:

Table Table, also owned by Whitbread, is a chain of pub and restaurants that closed over 30 branches this month, including:

• The Derby Lodge, Merseyside

• The Harbour, Gwynedd
• The Lee Burn, Lanarkshire

• The Ormonde, Suffolk
• The Red Lion, Hampshire
• The Ridgacre, West Midlands
• The Showground, Norfolk
• The Stanhope Arms, Staffordshire
• The Trevithick Inn, Cornwall

All branches closed on September 3rd.

Cookhouse + Pub is the final Whitbread-owned restaurant chain that closed all 14 of its branches in the UK this month. The closures included:

• The Brickfield, Kent
• The Freeman, Bridlington 
• The Highwayman, St Neots
• Inn on the Park, Enfield
• The Queen Inn, West Midlands
• The Steamboat, Skegness
• Three Piers, Blackpool
