A golf club has been forced to close after a fire caused "significant damage" to its clubhouse on Saturday evening.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were called to a building fire at Conwy Golf Club at about 21:21 GMT.

In a statement on social media, Conwy Golf Club said: "It is with great sadness that we must share that a serious fire occurred at the clubhouse last night."

It added "thankfully, no one was hurt," and said it was "incredibly grateful to the emergency services and hard work throughout the night".

"For safety reasons, the golf course and all club facilities are currently closed," it said.

"We know this news will come as a huge shock to our members, visitors, and the local community."

The fire service said firefighters from Conwy, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno, Rhyl, Denbigh, St Asaph, Abergele, Betws-y-Coed and a high volume pump from Caernarfon were all in attendance.

Pictures showed the roof of the clubhouse was completely burned through.

The club said "emergency services have specifically requested that members, visitors, and the public do not attend the club premises under any circumstances until the site is declared safe", adding "access to the grounds and buildings is strictly prohibited".

Responding to the club's statement, one commenter said it was "incredibly sad news", while another wrote: "As members we will all have to pull together and play our part in the rebuild of this great club."

On its website, Conwy Golf Club describes its championship links course as located in a "stunning" coastal spot, and ranked number one in north Wales.
