Has Liverpool vs Brighton been postponed? Official statement issued after events cancelled

MetOffice have issued a yellow weather warning, which is in place across Merseyside until 11pm on Sunday
London weather: Storms Austen and Boelo to bring 50mph gusts and heavy rain over two days

Liverpool's Premier League match against Brighton at Anfield is set to go ahead despite severe weather warnings prompting closures and cancellations across Merseyside.

The fixture is scheduled to kick off today, Sunday, October 25, at 2pm, but concerns over high winds and potential travel disruption had raised fears the game could be postponed. A yellow weather warning is in place across Merseyside until 11pm on Sunday, with the Met Office forecasting heavy rain and strengthening winds.

But Liverpool have confirmed that both their men’s and women’s fixtures are set to go ahead. A statement read: “Liverpool FC’s fixtures at Anfield and St Helens Stadium today will both go ahead as planned.

“The men’s team host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League and the women’s team are facing London City Lionesses in the Barclays Women’s Super League, with each kicking off at 2pm GMT.

“Due to the very windy weather, please take care if you are travelling to either game, plan your journey in advance and give yourself extra time. Club stewards will be on hand at both stadiums to assist supporters – please follow their guidance when you arrive.”

There is a precedent for severe weather disrupting Liverpool fixtures, with the Merseyside derby against Everton in December 2024 postponed because of safety concerns caused by Storm Darragh.

Met Office update on Sunday morning

The Met Office’s latest forecast suggests the worst of Storm Boelo is moving away from Merseyside, although strong winds will continue across northern parts of the UK.

Updated at 4am on Sunday, the five-day forecast said: “Strong winds continue as Storm Boelo slowly clears away”.

Events cancelled across Merseyside

Liverpool City Council were forced to cancel Saturday's River of Light event, marking the second consecutive night the festival has been called off because of safety concerns.

Knowsley Safari Park has also announced it will close on Sunday because of high winds, advising customers to contact the park directly about refunds.

Liverpool Cathedral will remain closed to general visitors following a further safety assessment.

The cathedral expects to reopen to general visitors on Monday, 26 October, but has urged people to check for updates before travelling.
