Homes evacuated after suspected bomb found in car

Several marked police cars and a large blue container with the word "police" printed on its side are positioned in a small residential road during the day. The roofs of some homes and a number of trees can also be seen behind the police vehicles.

People were evacuated from their homes after police discovered a suspected bomb in a car parked in a residential street.

Dorset Police officers made the discovery in a vehicle in Sherwood Avenue, in Poole, at about 22:20 GMT on Friday.

A cordon was placed around the scene and properties in the immediate vicinity were evacuated. No arrests have been made and Dorset Police said it is continuing to investigate the incident.

Officers initially visited a property on the road following reports that a nearby parked car contained "offensive weapons and other suspicious items".

There has also been a police presence in Park Homer Drive, in Wimborne, which police say is connected to the incident in Poole.

One resident told the BBC they had seen armed officers and sniffer dogs in the area.
