How Manchester United should line up for Hull clash as Marcus Rashford question lingers
Marcus Rashford’s future remains up in the air as Manchester United prepare to get their Premier League campaign underway away at newly-promoted Hull City.
The winger made his first appearance for the club in close to two years last week as United suffered a 4-2 friendly defeat against AC Milan.
He has since spent time on loan at Aston Villa and Barcelona, but after the Spanish outfit decided not to make his stay permanent this summer, he is back at Carrington with his future up in the air.
Michael Carrick has made clear he is happy to keep Rashford at United, but it remains to be seen whether the player will find himself a move before the transfer window closes.
With his transfer future uncertain, he is not expected to start at the MKM Stadium, though he should make the bench and could stand to play his first Premier League minutes since April 2025.
That leaves Carrick to send out a front four of Patrick Dorgu, Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo in behind Bryan Mbeumo, playing at striker as Benjamin Sesko recovers from a shin injury.
There will be two competitive United debuts, though. Andrey Santos, a new recruit from Chelsea, impressed throughout pre-season and will get the nod here.
He should be joined at the base of midfield by Youri Tielemans, who will start in place of Mason Mount, also injured.
Senne Lammens is the undisputed No1 keeper, regardless of both Tom Heaton and Karl Darlow lacking match fitness.
In front of him, Carrick is close to settling on a back four, with Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw nailed on starters.
Noussair Mazraoui has earned considerable minutes at right-back in pre-season, but Diogo Dalot should retake the place.
Man Utd predicted XI to face Hull (4-2-3-1): Lammens; Dalot, Martinez, Maguire, Shaw; Santos, Tielemans; Dorgu, Fernandes, Amad; Mbeumo
