Manchester City’s first Champions League away day of the season will see them travel to Portugal to take on Porto.

Enzo Maresca is preparing to take his new City side onto the continent for the first time after an up-and-down first few weeks of his tenure.

He suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield, which he followed with an eye-watering late spend in the transfer window, adding Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez to the tune of well over £200m.

City have since gone unbeaten through their first league matches of the campaign, most recently beating Coventry City 1-0.

The bar for success this season is not too high for Maresca, after Pep Guardiola’s men crashed out in the round of 16 last season, suffering a 5-1 humbling by Real Madrid.

Porto, meanwhile, were not in the Champions League at all last season, instead qualifying for the Europa League. After finishing fifth in the league phase, they breezed past Stuttgart before being dispatched by Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 across the two legs.

A strong start to the campaign has seen Porto win five from five, leaving them two points clear of Sporting atop the Liga Portugal.
