Tottenham will look to record their first victory of the season as they host Charlton Athletic to open their Carabao Cup campaign.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side had been tipped for a resurgent campaign after a summer of heavy investment in the transfer market, but the opening weekend of the Premier League season did not go at all to plan.

De Zerbi named four new signings to the starting lineup as Spurs visited Brentford on Saturday, but they could not inspire victory and were sent packing with a 3-0 defeat.

And there was further bad news post-match, as the Italian confirmed James Maddison had suffered a shoulder injury during his brief cameo off the bench.

Charlton will be no pushovers, though, as De Zerbi eyes a first victory of the new season. Nathan Jones’ Addicks have made a strong start in the Championship, beating Derby County on opening day before upsetting West Ham 2-1 at a sold-out London Stadium.

They reached this stage of the Carabao Cup by way of a routine 3-1 victory over League Two strugglers Cheltenham Town.

In the UK, the game will be televised live on Sky Sports+, with coverage starting at 7.35pm BST ahead of a 7.45pm kick-off.
