Michael Carrick begins permanent reign against Championship play-off winners
Stage is set: Hull face Manchester United at the MKM Stadium on Premier League opening day

Manchester United kick off the new Premier League season with a lunchtime trip to Hull. It’s the second game on opening weekend after champions Arsenal cruised past Coventry to begin their title defence, with another newly-promoted team now facing a daunting first assignment at the MKM Stadium. Michael Carrick officially begins his reign as permanent Man Utd boss today after a successful interim spell in charge and will want a fast start after a dispiriting end to pre-season.

Marcus Rashford could make his first competitive Manchester United appearance since December 2024, while there are expected to be debuts for new signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. Benjamin Sesko is pushing to return from injury, though it will be a little while before fans see Carlos Baleba in action. Hull are already battling selection issues as they embark upon their first top-flight campaign for a decade, with a raft of absentees including new signings Jack Butland, Oscar Zambrano and Joe Gelhardt, plus Charlie Hughes.

The odds are firmly stacked against the Championship play-off winners this term and Sergej Jakirovic will be eager to prove the doubters wrong. Follow Hull vs Man Utd live below!

BREAKING: Man Utd hand Marcus Rashford No9 shirt

Manchester United have confirmed their squad numbers for the 2026/27 season ahead of today’s Premier League opener at Hull.

The most important of which is Marcus Rashford being handed the No9 shirt, in what is surely a clear sign that he is going nowhere ahead of the summer transfer deadline on September 1.

Rashford’s old No10 went to Matheus Cunha when he joined the club from Wolves last summer, with the England forward not having a number on today’s matchday programme at the MKM Stadium.

The United No9 was previously worn by Rasmus Hojlund, who spent last season on loan at Napoli and joined the Serie A club in a permanent transfer earlier this summer.

Hull vs Man Utd prediction

Manchester United should make a rapid start to the permanent Michael Carrick era this afternoon.

Despite being bested 4-2 by Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in Poland to finish pre-season, it was otherwise a mostly promising summer for the Red Devils as they beat Atletico Madrid and dominated a youthful Paris Saint-Germain side as well as overcoming the likes of Leeds and Rosenborg.

The midfield has a much-needed fresh feel and Marcus Rashford’s return adds another weapon in attack, while any involvement for Benjamin Sesko would be a huge boost on opening day.

It’s a big occasion for Championship play-off winners Hull as they return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2016/17 season, but this is a very tough first assignment indeed.

The Tigers’ transfer business has been slow and not particularly impressive, with Sergej Jakirovic already dealing with a host of injury absentees.

Their chances of beating the drop look slim on paper.

Man Utd to win, 2-0.

Marcus Rashford is expected to be named on the Manchester United bench today as he gets set for potentially his first competitive appearance for the club since December 2024, having returned against Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan in their final pre-season friendly in Poland last weekend.

There should be debuts for new midfielders Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, with fellow recruit Karl Darlow also now training after injury and potentially poised to back up first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Striker Benjamin Sesko is pushing to return from a lingering shin issue that ruled him out throughout pre-season, while Michael Carrick said yesterday that Mason Mount was “touch and go” to feature as he battles a foot problem.

Matthijs de Ligt is still building up his fitness following a long-term back injury and won’t be involved today, while Manuel Ugarte faces months on the sidelines after knee surgery.

Hull team news

Hull’s hopes of making a quick start on their return to the Premier League are already being hampered by a number of injury absentees.

Tigers boss Sergej Jakirovic is without several key players for today’s opening showdown with Manchester United, including new signings Jack Butland and Oscar Zambrano, plus the returning Joe Gelhardt.

New midfielder Hidemasa Morita could be on the bench, but centre-back Charlie Hughes will be out for some time after undergoing hernia surgery earlier this summer.

Matty Jacob is also returning, though is expected to leave Hull before the transfer deadline.
