A council has said it has launched an investigation after a 14-year-old boy fell from a top-floor window of a double-decker bus.

Cambridgeshire Police said it was called to the incident in Doddington Road, Wimblington, at about 15:50 BST on Wednesday.

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said its health and safety team was "working closely with the police and the operator and will be fully investigating the circumstances around this serious incident".

The boy was initially taken to Peterborough City Hospital before being transferred to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, where he remains with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The teenager, a pupil at Cromwell Community College, was travelling on a council-commissioned home to school transport service, the county council confirmed.

"Our thoughts are with the family and the child affected. We wish them a full and swift recovery," a council spokesperson added.

A spokesperson for the school, which is based in Chatteris, said it was working with authorities to "establish the full circumstances of the incident".

They added: "We are deeply concerned by what has happened, and our thoughts are very much with the pupil and their family at this incredibly difficult time.

"We are also providing support to pupils who witnessed what happened, recognising how distressing this will have been for them.

"Our immediate priority is the wellbeing of the pupil, their family and our wider school community, and we would ask that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."
