Jail for speeding driver found hiding in bin

Bishop Street Courthouse is a large marble building with pillars at the front, surrounded by high black gates. A car and a road sign can be seen beside the courthouse.

A driver who admitted dangerous driving, speeding, failing to stop for police and driving without insurance was found hiding in a bin by police.

Caolan Harkin, 23, of Rosses Gate in Londonderry, was initially spotted by police driving at 84mph (135km/h) on Derry's Glenshane Road on 16 February.

Londonderry Magistrates' Court was told on Friday that Harkin sped away when police started to follow him, driving through a red light and causing a number of vehicles to swerve out of his way.

Harkin, who was sentenced to four months in jail, was later found by police hiding in a bin, the court heard.

'Catalogue of appalling driving'

In sentencing, district judge Ted Magill told Harkin his "catalogue of appalling driving" was one of the worst he had seen, adding it was "only by the grace of God" no one had been killed.

The court was told Harkin had answered no comment during police interviews before later claiming he had evaded officers because a passenger in the car was wanted by police.

However, it was then pointed out that Harkin was already speeding when police first spotted him, the court heard.

A defence barrister said he was unsure if Harkin's reasons made the situation "better or worse", and said "the facts speak for themselves".

District judge Magill said had Harkin not entered a guilty plea he would have been convicted.

Harkin has also been disqualified from driving for two years
