Jamal Musiala breaks silence after collapsing on pitch twice in one week

Fitness worry: Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala has revealed he has been diagnosed with a ‘neurological dysfunction’ which has caused him to collapse mid-match twice in a matter of days.

Bayern faced Heidenheim in their final pre-season fixture of the summer on Tuesday, with Musiala coming off the bench in the 60th minute.

He was withdrawn again having played just nine minutes, though, after appearing disoriented and collapsing on the pitch.

Players from both teams formed a guard around Musiala as he received treatment. He was subsequently helped off the pitch by medics, but appeared OK as he walked off under his own steam.

It comes just days after Musiala, 23, collapsed during another friendly against RB Leipzig.

Video from the match showed a similar incident, with Musiala looking disoriented on the pitch and starting to fall before he was caught and lowered to the turf by striker Ismael Saibari. He then walked off the pitch with medics and promptly returned to team training.

Speaking after that match, Eberl simply said: "The most important thing is that (Musiala) is well. There's nothing more to say about anything else."

And Musiala has now spoken out about his condition, thanking supporters for their concern and support before revealing his diagnosis.

He wrote: “First things first - I’m doing well! I understand many of you are worried. I want to put those concerns to rest today and explain a little more.

“I have been diagnosed with brief, temporary episodes of absence that are easily treatable and are caused by a neurological dysfunction. These can lead to the moments that have occurred recently, such as against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim.

“I know that they may seem scary at first glance - but for me, they are currently simply part of my everyday life. I am receiving the best possible medical care in this regard, and I am very optimistic. FC Bayern and the people closest to me are always by my side and supporting me on this journey.”

He continued, adding: “What is important is that there is no additional health risk beyond this. In close consultation and regular communication with the specialists, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the approval of the neurological specialists, to continue doing what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my everyday life and continuing to pursue my passion of playing football.

“I have taken responsibility for that decision.”

It remains to be seen whether Musiala will be able to contribute to Bayern’s Bundesliga title defence, which gets underway on August 28 as the Bavarians host VfB Stuttgart. Also in doubt is his involvement in Saturday’s Supercup against Borussia Dortmund.

This issue is the latest in a litany of fitness woes to have impacted Musiala in recent years. The most notable of these came as the former Chelsea academy starlet suffered a broken ankle at the Club World Cup in the summer of 2025, which kept him sidelined for several months and limited him to just 15 league appearances last season.
