A large fire at a recycling facility in east Belfast's dock area has ended after two days.

The blaze, which saw smoke pour from the Clearway Disposals facility, was reported shortly after midday on Wednesday.

At the peak more than 50 firefighters worked overnight to control the blaze, which involved "approximately 4,500 tonnes of scrap cars and loose metal".

The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said "the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental".

The fire was put out just after midday on Friday.

A NIFRS spokesperson said: "Firefighters worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the incident to bring the fire under control and prevent further fire spread.

"At the height of the incident, over 50 Firefighters, supported by other fire service personnel were involved in the operational response alongside Belfast Harbour fire tugs and Sky Watch NI.

"We would like to thank the public for their patience whilst we dealt with this incident, our multi-agency partners for their support, and NIFRS personnel for their hard work and professionalism throughout the response."

Another fire broke out at the same Clearway Disposals site in May.

Belfast Harbour confirmed the Viking Sky cruise ship left Belfast three hours earlier than planned on Wednesday due to the fire.

It said the decision to leave early rested with the ship's captain and cruise operator.
